How to move a model from Rhino to 3ds Max

  1. Export from Rhino. Save the Rhino model as a .3dm file.
  2. Open it here. Drop the .3dm file on this page. It opens in 3D in your browser.
  3. Pick what you need. Tick the elements or categories you want. Move, rotate or scale them if the model needs it.
  4. Export for 3ds Max. Choose FBX (.fbx) in the export list and press Export. The FBX is version 7.4 with materials, names and user properties.
  5. Open it in 3ds Max. In 3ds Max, go to File › Import and pick the .fbx file.

Can I move a Rhino model into 3ds Max?

Yes. Export 3DM from Rhino, convert it to FBX here, and open that in 3ds Max. It takes a few minutes and needs no plug-in.

What arrives in 3ds Max?

The FBX file keeps geometry, colours, element names, categories (groups) and properties (user properties).

Do I need Rhino or 3ds Max installed?

You need Rhino only to export the 3DM file, or ask whoever sent the model to export it. The conversion itself runs in your browser.

Is it free?

Are my files uploaded?

No. The model is read and converted inside your browser tab. It is never sent to a server, and closing the tab clears it.
